NEPower delivers critical infrastructure for one of Finland’s most significant battery energy storage projects
Construction of a 55 MW / 110 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) will start in Uusnivala, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland. The facility will provide Fingrid with essential services such as frequency regulation, grid balancing, and energy shifting—strengthening Finland’s electricity grid and supporting the country’s energy transition.
The project is led by NTR, a leading European investor and developer in sustainable infrastructure.
NEPower plays a critical role in the project as the Balance of Plant (BoP) contractor, delivering both the BESS integration and 110kV substation works, including the 110kV connection cable to Fingrid’s Uusnivala substation. NEPower’s contribution is essential to the successful implementation and future grid connection of the system.
Mika Alatalo, CEO of NEPower, comments:
“We are pleased to be part of NTR’s BESS project in Finland as the Balance of Plant contractor. This is a significant step for NEPower, and we appreciate the trust NTR has placed in us. We look forward to contributing to the success of this important project and to supporting Finland’s sustainable energy transition together.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, with commissioning expected by summer 2026.
The project marks NTR’s first BESS venture in Finland, as well as the first battery storage investment from the Clean Power (Europe) Fund—a joint initiative between NTR and Legal & General. The fund recently closed with more than €600 million in commitments to support Europe’s decarbonisation and energy security goals.
