Joni Nikkola - The Foundation of NEPower’s Civil Works

Joni Nikkola became a part of NEPower’s story at a time when the future of the construction sector looked uncertain. At NEPower, the need for civil works and structural engineering expertise had increased, and Joni started his journey working across five different departments. First Joni supported a wide range of activities across the company, but his background in site management and project leadership quickly shaped his role
toward project-focused responsibilities. Today he works fully within NEPower’s projects.

A versatile career shaped by growing expertise

Joni’s career at NEPower has been exceptionally diverse.

“I’ve done everything from updating our quality management system and maintaining certifications to earthwork quantity calculations, pricing and design coordination. I appreciate I’ve been able to influence my own role and responsibilities,” Nikkola says.

Joni focuses primarily on the civil works and structural aspects of NEPower’s projects. He consults ongoing projects, supports project managers, calculates earthwork quantities and prices of construction-related work during the tender phase. In the most demanding projects, he leads design coordination, manages contractor tendering and creates significant cost savings for the company through his expertise.

Civil works and structural engineering brings added value to substation projects and renewable energy projects

Civil engineering expertise can’t be taken for granted in substation and energy-sector projects. Joni’s role has brought NEPower a clear competitive advantage: clients appreciate that the company can provide answers to construction-related questions as well.

“The impact of my work is visible directly in project efficiency, cost-effectiveness and customer satisfaction.”

According to Joni, energy industry offers excellent opportunities for professionals in construction and civil engineering. The number of work phases is similar to building construction, but the overall project entities are significantly larger and the societal impact even bigger.

“At NEPower, I have the opportunity to contribute to projects that strengthens the resilience of Finland’s electrical infrastructure in an unstable global environment. I get to help build projects that are important for society”.

Skilled and supportive work community at the company’s core

NEPower’s work community has made a strong impression on Joni.

“Responsibilities and roles are clear, but the hierarchy is low. I especially value our open culture, where anyone can ask for help from anyone.”

The organization has grown rapidly over the past year. According to Joni, the company has successfully combined experience with fresh minds in a way that benefits everyone.
Joni has seen NEPower’s growth up close and appreciates the way it has been managed.

“The company hasn’t grown at any cost. Risks have been controlled and employee wellbeing has been prioritized. When the workload has increased, company has genuinely reacted and taken the necessary steps.”

Family-centered values at the heart of everyday life

Joni’s personal life is filled with building projects, such as constructing and improving his family’s home.
Joni describes himself as highly family oriented. He spends most of his free time with his family and at his children’s hobbies, especially cheering on the sideline of the football field.

“I’m genuinely happy that family-friendliness is one of NEPower’s value. It’s visible in everyday work life.”
